The Théâtre du
Vieux-Colombier: Towards a Contemporary Repertoire On April 8th 1993, when the Comédie-Française
reopened the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in the heart of
the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area, many people were
impatient to revisit the renovated site of this legendary
stage. It had been silent for the last twenty years and
its rich and troubled history has deeply marked the
development of 20th-century theatre.
Today, the theatre has forged its own
identity: people come here to see the Comédiens-Français interpret a wider and prevailingly modern
repertoire, in a more intimate 300-seat auditorium in a
modern theatre with no balconies or boxes unlike the horseshoe-shaped Salle
Richelieu.
