The 1999 Budget of the Comédie-Française: 198 million francs (27 million dollars)

The state subsidiy, which amounted to 131 MF (20.8 million $) in 1999, covers nearly 70% of the operating costs of the theatre. Ticket sales, which brought in 33 MF (3.8 million $) in 1999, cover about 20% of all expenses, or approximately the production budget for performances.

The audience benefits most from the subsidies. In fact, the average price for a theoretical seat would be 677 F (93 $), but 514 F (76.7 $) of that sum are borne by the subsidy, so that ticket sales only bring in 130 F (18 $), and the additional 33 F (6.7 $) comes from other revenues.
For the audience, full-price seats vary between 30 and 190 F (0.5 to 30.8 $). Several subscription or category reservation schemes are in place offering reductions of 15 and 30%. A preferential-price policy, which has been established for several years now, offers our younger audience reductions of up to 50 and 60% under certain conditions.
