The Comédie-Française,
a theatre, a firm
In March 1995, thanks to
the impetus given by Jean-Pierre Miquel, and on the basis
of a draft text written by a group of shareshareholding members or
"sociétaires", the French
government gave the Comédie-Française the status of
Industrial and Commercial Public Corporation
(Établissement public à caractère industriel et
commercial), which entitles the company to become a legal
entity that is separate from the State. The advantage of
this option is that the institution remains under a
public-law regime with a more flexible structure which,
without compromising the specificity of the company,
allows it to hold shares in subsidiaries (theatre,
audio-visual, etc.) and to participate in revenue-making
activities. Neither the Company of Comédiens-Français (Société des
Comédiens-Français) nor the
actors' legal and financial situation are modified.
