  800 Performances per Season
by Jean-Pierre Miquel (continued)

On the production side, the Comédie-Française remains a "craft industry", although it consists of more than 400 permanent staff all year round and hires just as many specialists as the need arises. Up to 400 performances are given every year in the Salle Richelieu (800, with tours and the other two theatres) and the Comedie-Française presents or revives more productions than any other national theatre.

Admittedly, current playbills at the Salle Richelieu show far fewer titles today than they did at the beginning of the century. This results from the fact that production methods have changed considerably over the last few years, thus necessitating more time and financial ressources due to rehearsal requirements and to more sophisticated sets, lights and costumes.

The great appreciation expressed by Paris audiences and the considerable success of the Comédie-Française's annual tours in France and abroad testify to the citizen-spectators' attachment to, and interest for, what must indeed be called the "Theatre of the Nation". The oldest theatrical organisation in the Western world still in operation today constantly affirms its ability to adapt, develop and renew its artistic creativity. Is it this that constitutes its eternal youth? Most certainly, provided that proper vigilance is exercised to prevent the potential drudgery of routine and the burden of habit.

The Comédie-Française has a bright future ahead, as long as it continues to evolve without abandoning the essence that constitutes its charm, its greatness and the enjoyment it provides.
