The aim of the
Comédie-Française is to affirm "its uniqueness and
its tradition".
For over three centuries, the Comédie-Française has
held its own at the heart of theatre life. Founded in 1680 with a view to merging Molière's company with the other
theatre companies then existent in Paris, it has
fascinated and attracted playwrights and actors ever
since. The company brings fame to them, they bring fame
to the company. It has a solid reputation with a
repertoire of more than 3000 plays and a legendary
company of actors with whom many stage directors are
eager to work. Since the Comédie-Française took over
the Théâtre
du Vieux-Colombier in 1993, and
created a third auditorium, the Studio-Théâtre, it now has the means to fulfil its mission
better by expanding its repertoire, especially
with regard to contemporary works. An Aim for the
Comédie-Française:
Widening Its Circles
by Jean-Pierre Miquel
Jean-Pierre Miquel, Managing Director of
the Comédie-Française, outlines the aim he has been
pursuing since his arrival in September 1993. This aim is
primarily based on the richness of the repertoire to be
preserved, rediscovered and enlarged, while maintaining
the company and the principle of alternating performances.
