Curtain raisers

A one-act play put on before the main performance, and which may contain very different subject matter. Today these curtain raisers, which were very common in the 18th and 19th centuries, have almost entirely disappeared. In the 20th century the Comédie-Française has been one of the remaining theatres to keep this tradition.
Today, the Studio-Théâtre puts on short plays either from the "forgotten" repertoire of curtain raisers or from the repertoire of contemporary works which often favours short plays.
