Molière
  THE WIDENING OF THE REPERTOIRE

Since 1946, the successive Managing Directors of the Comédie-Française, André Obey, Pierre-Aimé Touchard, Pierre Descaves and Claude de Boisanger have left the marks of their tenures. Between 1960 and 1983, three actor-directors were appointed: Maurice Escande (1960-70), who opened up the theatre to new actors and outside stage directors; Pierre Dux (1970-79, who continued this policy with the Théâtre de l'Odéon and also celebrated the tercentennial of Molière's death and worked on the administrative reform and renovation of the theatre; Jacques Toja (1979-83), who took on the responsibility of the programming the Comédie-Française's tercentennial, and celebrated the Odéon's bicentennial in 1982 by inviting many great foreign companies.

At the time, Comédie-Française performances were attended by a faithful audience, but new theatre-goers were also joining in: thanks to Pierre Dux's initiative, a special subscription category aimed at employees of businesses and organisations (collectivités) radically changed the subscription policy. All these spectators greatly appreciated a homogeneous company of renowned actors, such as Jean Meyer, Béatrice Bretty, Véra Korène, Annie Ducaux, Gisèle Casadesus, Louis Seigner, Robert Hirsch, Jacques Charon, Jean Piat, Micheline Boudet, and so many others.
