1770: THE SALLE DES MACHINES AT THE TUILERIES PALACE

The Coronation
of Voltaire

The dilapidated state of the theatre on Rue des Fossés-Saint-Germain forced the Comédiens-Français to move temporarily to the Salle des Machines at the Tuileries Palace in 1770. There the première of Beaumarchais's Le Barbier de Séville took place in 1775. Voltaire's bust was crowned on stage following a triumphant performance of his tragedy Irène in 1778.
