In L’Événement, Annie Ernaux details three months of her life, between October 1963 and January 1964, with the hindsight of several decades; three months covering the period between the moment she discovered she was pregnant and the days following her abortion, an illegal procedure in France at the time. “Up to which point do women have bodily autonomy?” Françoise Gillard tells the story that impacted the 23-year-old author, uncompromisingly exposing the issues that come with being a woman.
