Thomas Ostermeier’s return to the Comédie-Française marks the entry of "King Lear" into the repertoire, a work that the German director, who has already directed six of Shakespeare’s plays, has long dreamed of staging.
The artistic director of the Schaubühne in Berlin thus returns to the Troupe after Twelfth Night or What You Will with this tragedy of excess, with an exceptional dramaturgical scope. Commissioning a new translation from Olivier Cadiot, he insists on the multiple mirror effects in the story of the old king who decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, whom he asks to publicly declare their love for him. The reserve shown by Cordelia – Lear’s youngest and most beloved daughter – in contrast to the declarations of Goneril and Regan, infuriates Lear and he disinherits her. In addition to the themes of old age, filial love and desire, abdication and the contradictions of the patriarchal system which doom it to failure, the play features a triple expression of madness: that of Edgar, who is betrayed by his illegitimate brother and feigns insanity in the guise of “poor Tom”, that of the Fool with his brilliantly imagined language, and of course that of Lear, whose flashes of insight only amplify the chaos. Lear, with its king facing the tragic consequences of his actions in the middle of a storm, was a glaring absence both in the Comédie-Française’s and Thomas Ostermeier’s repertoire. The director unleashes its apocalyptic force in an all-encompassing set design where the stage becomes an immense moor. With absolute mastery of the performance space, combined with live music, he lays the entire theatre bare to the madness of the world.
