An evening spent in his company is the promise of a light-hearted and intelligent spectacle, so effective are his fables inspired by Aesop at making us think. More complex than they appear, we can easily find in each one a story that concerns us for La Fontaine is clearly speaking about humankind through his animal characters and it is impossible to escape the allusion as he forces us to laugh at ourselves.
