Marivaux is a playwright you never tire of performing, fifty times, a hundred times. Night after night you rediscover the situations. You just have to jump in and let yourself be surprised by what the text produces in each person. This is a theatre that can only be performed in the present, with one’s partners. It’s not careful and controlled, it’s the unconscious that speaks, the sentences escape, it’s a living language, which is performed! Perhaps because masks and disguises are involved, the same line often offers multiple possibilities for the actor (which is also why we never tire of it). When you’re lost, trying to be as literal as possible often makes sense of the situation, line after line. This is the great advantage of Théâtre à la table. A candour with the text that can potentially reveal what is going on at a deeper level.
