Gargantua is a tale. A colourful, eloquent tale from another era, whose style, while seemingly complex for today’s readers, is really worth being heard, for its fabric is a rich as a cream-filled pastry’s. Giant Gargantua was born from his mother’s ear after an eleven-month pregnancy. Using the codes of fables, Rabelais tells the story of the giant’s birth and formative years, then his life as a warrior, in order to criticize the dangers of a rigoristic education stuck on natural intelligence. Instead, Rabelais defends humanist education. This author, known for his portraits of overeaters gathered at humongous buffets, may well be the king of all those who can enjoy a nice grub.
