She began working on the piece in the form of a reading presented during a 2023 session of the Reader’s Bureau under the title L’Aire poids-lourds, which was elected Audience Favourite. This play centred on teenagers was inspired by real events which occurred in an underprivileged suburb near Sydney; it was written following a long series of interview with young girls as well as psychiatrists, social workers, and truck drivers. The story revolves around the emancipation journey of two middle schoolers, Bee and Ellie, whose fantasies about their future are imbued in references from the virtual world. They love “daring” each other to do this or that, prefer experimenting with the young rather than having to live with adult truth, and are pop culture aficionados with an overexposition to sex symbols. The set welcomes a succession of moreor-less recent shots of their past, between school yards, parties, sex acts inside trucks in exchange of a bill, or police stations, shining a bleak light on the biological implications of turning into a woman.
Séphora Pondi focused on the cinematographic dimension of the piece, whose pace matches that of the lighting-fast rhythm of that generation’s thoughts. Several layers of story are superimposed and materialised on set through a wide array of visual and sound patterns. The show’s theatrical force also lies in the breaks in realism, peppered with more abstract sequences during which the world of bugs invades human debacle – which allows the director to tackle the disturbing yet aesthetically fascinating matter of metamorphosis.
