“The idea that you were writing for your daughter inspired you”, the publisher Hetzel commented to Hector Malot in relation to “Sans famille (Nobody's Boy)”, which was a worldwide success when it was released in 1878.
For Léna Bréban, this coming-of-age novel is an opportunity to open a great storybook and to use the magic of theatre to follow Rémi across France and as far as England. Taken in at birth by Mr Barberin, he is raised by a loving adoptive mother until the age of 8 when, crushed by debt, Barberin decides to rent him to Vitalis. This travelling artist, an eccentric but benevolent man, becomes his tutor. Rémi then joins the acrobat’s small troupe alongside Capi the dog and Joli-Coeur the monkey – portrayed in this production by an actor and a puppet, respectively. From lucky encounters to misadventures,he spends a – fortunately short – length of time at Garofoli’s, a criminal who forces children to work for him. After a peculiar stay with his real-fake family, the Driscolls, who are receivers of stolen goods, he and his new best friend Mattia manage to find his biological mother, from whom he was taken during an inheritance dispute.
Without sugar-coating the story, the production gives a colourful twist to the young hero’s adventures. In a burlesque, Charlie Chaplin-like spirit, emotion and laughter take the audience on a journey buffeted by snowstorms and social injustices – which Hector Malot struggled with in his lifetime. Léna Bréban is aware how much a tale of yesteryear can change our perception of exiled people forced to sleep in the streets. Rémi also reminds us of the importance, beyond family, of the many encounters that help us go through life.
