For her return to directing for the stage after having distinguished herself behind the camera with "Pupille" in 2018, Jeanne Herry has chosen the theme of the Internet forum – this immaterial and very vast public arena that acts as a space of exchange between people with common but also radically opposed life problems, in which all kinds of neuroses, anxieties and joys express themselves, both funny or poignant.
For years now, it has provided a snapshot of our time, such is the opportunity for self-expression offered by each subject. “The stage is the only place where such an abstract space and such concrete issues can be represented”, states Jeanne Herry. Following an original idea by Maël Piriou, she formed a collective of authors, novelists in particular, to broaden themes, open up points of view and develop registers of language – essential components of this eclectic practice of public speech. This diversity is the driving force of a human comedy that today is constructed around the idea of raising and dissolving barriers.
Emphasising the playful form presented by the overlapping of these communal and solitary voices, she is already imagining the actors’ freedom to shift from a choral moments in collective tableaux to more intimate scenes. While acknowledging the coldness that characterises online life, she points to the vibrant heat of the opinions that can be exchanged there. The contrast between neurotic violence and mass benevolence provides her with a raw and unfiltered material: “what is articulated in the forums, in the shadow of our society, is the most striking expression of its complexity.”
