TicketsSeveral plays by major British playwright Duncan Macmillan were directed by Katie Mitchell at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, and the Royal Court and Barbican Theatre in London.
The play revolves around a normal couple discussing whether or not they are going to have a child. Their hesitations spark fits of desire and fear; the intertwined questions about how strong their couple is, about their own ability to love and reproduce, are deeply connected to the state of our current world, disturbed by pollution, individualism, and geopolitical conflicts.
Robin Ormond fell for the play as soon as he discovered it in London, and has been keeping it in the “dream projects” corner of his memory ever since. The young director and former Comédie-Française academy member has already completed remarkable projects, such as Marius von Mayenburg’s latest play, Egal – which he translated into French – performed at the Scala Provence for the 2025 Festival d’Avignon then in Paris, as well as an adaptation of Schiller’s The Ghost-Seer, performed at the prestigious Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar in October 2026. For Lungs, he was hooked by the high-quality writing revolving around the banality of everyday life and ringing with the very humour and liveliness which make British theatre so compelling. Thanks to a string of striking lines, the play focuses on the way anxiety about the world tends to spoil or strengthen romantic relationships, or how becoming aware of collective surroundings may chip away at intimate bonds. Whether the lovers interrupt each other or refuse to let go so as not to lose their train of thoughts, the dialogues are exhilarating. The audience witnesses the two beings get older through virtuoso ellipsis, free of any breaks, as a way to illustrate the rocky passing of time coupled to an urgent need for answers.
