Monsieur de Pourceaugnac

For the staging of Monsieur de Pourceaugnac – in which Louis XIV wished to take part – the two Jean-Baptistes invented, in haste, a new impromptu, on a framework borrowed from the commedia dell’arte, with dances and music.

The misadventures of this lawyer from the Limousin who has come to Paris to marry a young girl he has never seen are an opportunity for Molière to offer his audience a wildly virtuoso ramble through the music of words: from hilarious medical jargon to Italian songs, from false Flemish and Picard dialects to authentic Occitan, from bad Swiss-German French to the droll ‘jargoning’ of men of law, he offers us a magnificent linguistic palette, which we, at the table (and accompanied by a few musical instruments of the time) will feast upon to try to express its richness, freedom and irreverence.”
