TicketsAs the master of plays within plays, Luigi Pirandello devised an original plot for this piece which premiered in Rome in 1921. A tedious rehearsal gathering actors, their director, and an engineer is stopped by a dysfunctional family of six characters looking for an author willing to write their story.
Pirandello came up with a genius idea: adding a layer of conflict to the family tensions, with the characters speaking up against the false truth of performers acting out their stories and their ability to adequately do so. According to Marina Hands, who is directing solo for the first time, the pressing desire to be “embodied” is a direct questioning of our time and the constant need to show off.
“What is a stage? […] A stage is a place where you play that you’re being serious”, as one of Pirandello’scharacters says. As an immense admirer of the Italian playwright’s work, Hands offers her own take with an immersive setting and a bifrontal set in which the audience is at the epicentre of the storm. In a Pirandello-like spirit, Marina Hands questions how much real life can infringe on the realm of theatre. As she constantly challenges the meaning of her craft, this fictitious creative team allows her to tackle the basis of the art’s necessity, for the artists and for the audience, while the future of theatre is uncertain.

La traduction-adaptation, publiée par L’Arche en juin 2024, a été commandée par la Comédie-Française à Fabrice Melquiot pour être présentée dans une mise en scène et une coadaptation de Marina Hands.
Le spectacle inclut un extrait de la pièce Le Jeu des rôles de Luigi Pirandello dans la traduction d’André Bouissy, publiée aux Éditions Gallimard.
