C'est lundi au Vieux-Co : Woman of letters and letters of women

“But what vexes me is, that the days pass away even when we do nothing, and that we grow old, and die. I find great fault with this. Life is too short; scarcely is our youth passed before we find ourselves in old age. I could wish to have a hundred years certain, and to leave the rest to chance.” Madame de Sévigné would have turned 400 in 2026. Born Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné, she is probably one of the most famous French women of letters. Twenty-five-years’ worth of letters to her daughter, Madame de Grignan, were partially published from 1725; their heartfelt and bubbly correspondence is the testament to the personal and social identities of her era – the era of Louis XIV and Molière. General Administrator and repertoire aficionado Clément Hervieu-Léger, classical repertoire specialist, head of the Maison de Colette and founder of the International Women's Writing Festival Frédéric Magret, and sociétaire Dominique Blanc, who is also recording part of Madame de Sévigné’s correspondence for our digital productions, are gathered to paint the portrait of a woman whose independent education was reflected in her writing, as well as that of women writers from the 17th century.
