Earning a great deal of attention when it premiered, Hors la loi (Outlaws) reopens a page of French history, that of the Bobigny trial, whose repercussions on public opinion contributed to the adoption of the Veil law on the voluntary termination of pregnancy in 1975.
In this play Pauline Bureau returns, in candid and precise detail, to the story of Marie-Claire, who was arrested for having an abortion after being raped by a classmate. The teenage girl’s mother, a colleague from the RATP and the “angel maker” stood accused alongside her. With their consent, the lawyer Gisèle Halimi, who along with Simone de Beauvoir, had just signed the Manifesto of the 343, transformed the defence into a public forum denouncing the injustice of the 1920 law banning abortion. Drawing the support of numerous personalities who had come to “testify” – the Nobel Prize winner in medicine Jacques Monod, the politician Michel Rocard or the actress Delphine Seyrig – she turned the courtroom into the theatre of a remarkably successful breakthrough in women’s rights.
“I am 15 years old forever”, states Marie-Claire at the start of the play, which gives voice to the woman she has become today, devastated by this personal story that has become part of history: “It is a true story”, says Pauline Bureau, “I draw on reality, which has many facets.” Through the determination of these women to defy the laws of a changing society, her theatre pays a salutary tribute to all today’s heroines.
