La Dernière Nuit de Don Juan ・ Comédie-Française

Along with "Cyrano de Bergerac", this "Last Night of Don Juan" is the second Edmond Rostand play of the season.

Don Juan meets the Devil after being granted a ten-year deferment. Today, in Venice, he is here to collect his dues dressed as a puppet master. Thus begins the fight, while Pulcinella berates the serial bedder from his booth. The play makes for true verbal jousting between two exceptional beings; a thousand and three souls, i.e., all the women Don Juan ever seduced, quickly join them.
Maryse Estier, a former member of the Comédie-Française Academy, is an Edmond Rostand buff and got her love for theatre from his work. After directing L’Aiglon, she selected his last play for her first time working with the Troupe. “His work’s brilliant crossing of elegance, humour and childhood topple over in this fierce dramatic poem. This is a new, unexpected Rostand we’re facing here, full of anger and irreverence.” In this deconstructed version of the myth of Don Juan, the author on the brink of death is seemingly dealing with his own vanity. To round off his plan, the Devil joins forces with the ghosts of Don Juan’s thousand and three lovers; contrasting the usual pack of forsaken, teary-eyed ladies, they turn over his every conviction, and with them the classic male take on conquests. The director, who will also present Schiller’s Marie Stuart in November 2023 at the Théâtre Montansier of which she is a resident artist, particularly enjoys unfolding the beauty of the rhythms of timeless pieces. Set foot into the nightmare of an accursed braggart, so sure of his stature he fails to understand the hell he will be drawn into by this fanciful devil.
