Did Odysseus, the man who took a thousand turns, fill Time – ten years of war and wandering – with nothing but victory and glory?

Laëtitia Guédon is the director and head of the Plateaux Sauvages, Paris. She has long been questioning people’s relationship with time and collective unconscious, using great mythological figures from major epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. After directing Kevin Keiss’ Troyennes – Les morts se moquent des beaux enterrements, an adaptation of Euripides’ Trojan Women, she recently worked on a production of Penthésilé.e.s/Amazonomachie by Marie Dilasser. In the summer of 2023, in Puducherry, she will carry out a crossover project between the characters of the Iliad and that of a seminal Buddhist scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, while also preparing an opera about hospitality revolving around Nausicaa. For her very first Comédie-Française production and season opener at the Studio-Théâtre, she ordered an original piece from author Claudine Galéa, who also wrote Je reviens de loin.
Trois Fois Ulysse (Thrice Odysseus) questions the model of the hero through three encounters with three female figures. First, Hecuba, the old queen of Troy, set to marry Odysseus after the fall of the city, makes him face his own violence. Then, the mystery woman he loved then left behind to go back to the purple, dangerous sea. Finally, Penelope, still adorning her same splendour as if she froze in time waiting for Odysseus, or remained faithful to her desire. The Unikanti choir accompanies three pairs of actors for this operatic piece in which theatre meets oratorio.
