“Silences can be so telling”, Michelangelo Antonioni used to say. This pioneer of modern cinema was a master of inner monologues.
His life work – for which he received a Golden Lion in 1983 and an Academy Honorary Award in 1995 – has inspired Lorraine de Sagazan for many years. After directing plays by Ibsen, Chekhov, or Norén, this 2022-2023 Villa Medici resident has prepared the third part, after Un sacre and La Vie invisible, of a cycle she initiated with author and playwright Guillaume Poix. This cycle revolves on theatre that relies on meeting contemporaries rather than on written text.
For her first production at the Comédie-Française, she opted for cinema in order to explore the inner state of characters through the lens of theatre. She has not adapted a scenario, but created an original piece inspired from Antonioni’s work, from his “ill feelings” exploration to his never-adapted short stories and scenarios. Desire, love and rotten love, – with La Notte as main source of inspiration – outlooks and the relation to the truth, for which Blowup provides endless possibilities, are Lorraine de Sagazan’s central themes. This multifaceted groundwork, akin to a long take filmed in a single place and time unit, allows actors to play within a space complete with shots filmed live or beforehand. They move through expectation, absence or the desires of (un)ravelling couples while unearthing the rich expression of inner landscapes from the secret of silences.
