Thomas Ostermeier opened last season with this frenetic "Twelfth Night".
In his work as a director, he is known for stagings that combine fidelity to the dramatic situation with freedom of interpretation, focusing on what he calls the actor-creator. In this production, he has his actors enter Illyria, the kingdom of illusion and artifice, which he gives form to as a landscape of emotions with a dangerous underside where madness lurks. “In Shakespeare's world”, he comments, “speech is a magnificent and incredibly powerful weapon. And like all weapons, it is double-edged: it can be used to tell the truth as well as to lie, to depict a world contrary to what it is in reality, in order to manipulate the people to whom it is directed and to pursue specific interests. When you play with the spoken word, when you turn words inside out, the world itself becomes unhinged.”
This comedy of appearances tells the story of Viola, the survivor of a shipwreck – like her twin Sebastian – who disguises herself, takes on the name of Cesario and offers her services to Duke Orsino. Charmed, the latter takes Cesario/Viola on as his page and tasks him/her with transmitting his love to the Countess Olivia. But Cesario/Viola, secretly attracted to the Duke, excels so well in his/her mission that the Countess is swept away by his/her ardour. At the same time, a quartet, with eminently comical manoeuvres, reveals the violent side of the romantic masquerade. Beyond the festive aspect of the play, Thomas Ostermeier highlights the depth of the existential questions that Shakespeare draws from this amorous plot revolving around interchanging genders.
